Insurance is only getting more and more complicated, we want to uncomplicate it. We are here to clear up any misunderstandings or insurance vagueness.

The Real Costs of Distracted Driving in Alberta

Did you know that using a mobile device while driving makes you more than four times more likely to be involved in a collision? Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of injury-related crashes in Alberta—and it’s entirely preventable.

At Bulger Insurance, we care about your safety on the road. Here’s what you need to know about distracted driving: what it is, the risks, the penalties, and how you can help keep yourself—and others—safe.

What Counts as Distracted Driving?

In Alberta, distracted driving goes beyond just texting. It includes any activity that takes your attention away from the road while driving, stopped in traffic, or waiting at a red light. Under the law, it is illegal to:

  • Text, dial, or use a hand-held phone
  • Use a tablet, laptop, or portable gaming device
  • Interact with a screen not related to driving (e.g., watching videos)
  • Manually program a GPS
  • Read printed materials
  • Write, draw, or sketch
  • Groom (combing hair, applying makeup, etc.)

Even holding a phone in your hand while driving is illegal in Alberta. Exceptions are limited to calling 911 or using the device when you are parked in a safe location off the road.

Using hands-free devices such as Bluetooth or dashboard-mounted GPS systems is permitted. However, just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s risk-free. Even hands-free phone conversations can reduce your reaction time and increase the chance of a crash.

Worth noting: Eating, drinking, smoking, or reaching for objects while driving are not classified as distracted driving under Alberta law, but they can still lead to careless or dangerous driving charges if your attention is compromised.

Penalties for Distracted Driving in Alberta

Distracted driving carries serious consequences. If you’re caught, you could face:

  • A $287 fine
  • 3 demerit points on your license

And that’s just the beginning. If your distracted driving leads to careless or dangerous driving charges, penalties may include:

  • Heavier fines
  • License suspension
  • Jail time

Additionally, a distracted driving conviction can significantly impact your auto insurance. You may see:

  • Higher premiums
  • Reclassification as a high-risk driver
  • Potential cancellation of your policy

Even if your driving seems unaffected, you can still be charged.

How to Avoid Driving Distracted

Let’s be honest—phones are hard to ignore. They ding, vibrate, and light up constantly. But there are simple strategies that can help you stay focused:

1. Turn It Off

The most effective solution is also the simplest. Power down your device before you start driving and turn it back on once you’ve arrived at your destination.

2. Put It Away

Out of sight, out of mind. Place your phone in your glove compartment, bag, or even the trunk if needed to reduce temptation.

3. Use Do Not Disturb Mode

Most smartphones offer a “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature. Activate this setting to block incoming notifications unless it’s an emergency or a trusted contact.

4. Let a Passenger Help

If you’re expecting a call or message, hand your phone to a passenger. They can keep an eye on it for you while you keep your eyes on the road.

Drive Safe—It’s Worth It

Distracted driving isn’t just illegal—it’s dangerous. Protect yourself, your passengers, and others on the road by staying focused behind the wheel.
