Insurance is only getting more and more complicated, we want to uncomplicate it. We are here to clear up any misunderstandings or insurance vagueness.

Is Your Vehicle Ready for Winter?

With winter just around the corner, it’s time to prepare for cold temperatures, snow, ice, and hazardous driving conditions. Here are six essential tips to get your vehicle ready for winter weather:

  1. Check and Refill Fluids Ensure your antifreeze is at the proper level and rated for your region’s coldest temperatures. If your antifreeze is more than five years old, consider having it drained and replaced (check your owner’s manual for guidance).
You’ll also be using more windshield washer fluid to deal with salt and chemicals on winter roads. Make sure to top off with a de-icing washer fluid rated for extreme cold (e.g., -35°C), and don’t forget to check the rear window washer fluid if your vehicle has a rear wiper.

  2. Inspect and Clean Your Lights With shorter days in winter, your vehicle’s lights are crucial for visibility and safety. Check all interior and exterior lights, replacing any bulbs that are not working. Clean the lamp covers and inspect for any cracks. If you notice damage, get it repaired before the cold worsens it.

  3. Have Your Brakes and Steering Checked Winter driving demands that your brakes and steering be in top shape. Have a mechanic inspect the brake pads, brake fluid, and steering system to ensure everything is functioning optimally to help prevent accidents or loss of control on slippery roads.

  4. Monitor Tire Pressure Weekly Before winter fully sets in, switch to winter tires if you haven’t already. Regularly check the tire pressure, as colder temperatures can lead to underinflation. Refer to your vehicle’s manual or the driver’s side door placard for the correct PSI. Remember to check your spare tire as well.

  5. Stock Your Car with Winter Essentials In addition to basics like a first-aid kit and flashlight, make sure your car is stocked for winter emergencies. Essentials include:
    • Ice scraper and snowbrush
    • Collapsible shovel
    • Cat litter, sand, or cardboard for traction if stuck

  6. Prepare for Unexpected Situations For longer trips or severe weather, consider keeping the following in your car:
    • 48-hour supply of water and snacks
    • Extra flashlight batteries
    • Device charger and car charging cables
    • Jumper cables
    • Blankets and warm clothing
    • Tire repair kit
    • A candle and matches or a lighter

If you’re traveling with kids, pack some activities like books or games to keep them occupied during any delays.

Drive Safely and Be Prepared

Follow these tips, drive at safe speeds, and maintain extra stopping distance in harsh winter conditions. Taking it slow and being prepared is the best way to ensure your safety and the safety of your passengers. Stay safe out there!
